Director Personal presentation My background is in social sciences and I have obtained a MSocSc in sociology from Tampere University, Finland, in 1996 and a PhD from the department of sociology in Gothenburg University, Sweden, in 2007. Between 1997 and 2001 I worked as a research manager in the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions in Dublin, Ireland. The European Foundation is an autonomous body of the European Commission. In the position of research manager, I lead and managed various European Union projects directly related to occupational health, working conditions and labour market issues. Within the sphere of occupational health and safety, my specific interest areas lie not only in ‘traditional’ OHS research (for example questions related dermatology, toxicology, epidemiology, accidents in the workplace, musculoskeletal and ergonomic problems, noise), but also in research that explores the role of various psychosocial factors at the workplace. In addition, for example the rapid ageing and increasing diversity of the workforce pose future challenges to occupational health and safety. I am Finnish by nationality but have lived outside of Finland for 17 years of my life. I am fluent in Finnish, Swedish and English and can also understand and read texts in several other languages.
