Preliminary program
Background
Workers in safety occupations and safety-critical organizations - police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, prison or military workers, border guards, customs officials, emergency centres, other kind of control room workers, as well as private security guards - have many general as well as specific factors that might threaten their safety and well-being at work. In these professions, the contact with customers can be challenging; and many are also working in atypical shifts. Such work highlights the importance of human factors. In addition, the field is changing quickly and thus raising requirements for development of expertise and skills. The course will provide most recent knowledge on how to promote holistic well-being of workers in these fields, and traditional work ability and safety issues will be discussed in an innovative and modern way.
Objectives
The objective of the course is to discuss and provide answers on how to evaluate and manage work related threats in the safety occupations and safety-critical organizations for promoting safety, health and work ability of the workers. The focus of the course will be on a holistic way to discuss risk factors related to demanding, unpredictable, and sometimes even catastrophic work situations, where workers of different safety organizations might be working at the same time.

Course structure and working method
The course consists of lectures and discussions. The key lecturers are invited to stay and participate in discussions for the duration of the course. The course includes an excursion to the 38-hectare-wide Training Ground where the participants will take part in a simulated rescue training situation. Participants are encouraged to send abstracts, which will be presented in an afternoon poster session. The deadline for submitting the abstacts is 2 August 2012.

Venue and accommodation
The venue of the course, Emergency Services College (Pelastusopisto), is located in Kuopio, Finland. Kuopio is situated in central Finland, in the North Savo region, and interspersed with thousands of lakes. The region can be reached in less than an hour by air from Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and by road or rail the journey only takes a few hours. The Emergency Services College is about 25 km south of the airport of Kuopio. Please note that the venue is an alcohol free establishment.
NIVA has reserved accommodation at the venue for the participants. The total price of a single room with full board is EUR 650/person, starting on Monday morning and closing on Thursday with lunch. The price includes accommodation, breakfast, conference coffees, lunch, dinner and the social program. For arrival on Sunday, one extra night including dinner and breakfast is EUR 115/person in single room. A day-package without accommodation is EUR 230/person, including conference coffees and lunch from Monday to Thursday. The social program is not included in this day-package price. Please contact the course coordinator for other options. The price and the program are subject to minor changes.
