29 May - 1 June 2012, Naantali Spa Hotel, Naantali, Finland, Adjunct professor Heikki Saarni, Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and Dr. Andra Ergle, Forvaters Terra Ltd, Latvia / 590 EUR

Preliminary programme

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) in its mandatory part A of the STCW Code states that physical capability of each seafarer must meet all the requirements for the basic safety. The seafarer's medical condition, disorder or impairment must not prevent the effective and safe conduct of routine and/ or emergency duties on board during the validity period of the medical certificate. As a guidance, Part B of the STCW Code states that every seafarer must be able to handle emergency duties on board such as putting on a lifejacket or immersion suit, escaping from smoke-filled spaces, taking part in fire-fighting duties, including the use of breathing apparatus and taking part in vessel evacuation procedures. ILO/ IMO Guidelines for Conduting Medical Examination for Seafarers gives a list of diseases which may affect a person's fitness for work at sea.

The goal of this course is to highlight exceptional situations on board ship, situations that may happen at sea, and to highlight the different possibilities to respond to these situations. The fitness criteria are discussed in the light of practical cases. Ethical questions are also discussed.
