September and November 2009
in rotation in all Nordic countries

NIVA has introduced a new concept; a series of one-day thematic lecture seminars which will circulate all the Nordic countries. The aim is to give national actors in each of the Nordic countries the opportunity to compare their own country's position and strategies with the similar practices and perspectives of other Nordic countries. Each of the seminars acts as an independent entity.

In 2009, the topic is "Ageing:does age matter more than workability?"

Future topics:
2010 Health effects and risks of nanoparticles
2011 Creating good practices for elderly work

This year's 1-day seminar in each of the Nordic countries will update current knowledge on ageing in the labour market, introduce the evidence-based concepts of work ability and age management, and introduce country reports and best practices of age management. The target is to share experiences and to improve Nordic collaboration and networking concerning age issues in the labour market.
The languages used for the morning sessions will be English. The afternoon sessions will be carried out in the national language of each country (PowerPoints in English).

Background
Approximately one third of the workforce exits the labour market before retirement age in the Nordic countries. The reasons are complex, as are the actions needed to reverse the trend. The reality is that our ageing societies can no longer afford these short work careers.

Thus we have to consider how we can extend work careers. This raises the question of how long we are able to work. Where are the limits of human work ability in a global labour market? In the middle of a global economic crisis (GEC) both employers and employees are worried about their future. The Nordic countries, enterprises and their older workforces should once again play a leading role in responding to new, global challenges.

The one-day seminars which will take place in each of the Nordic countries will update current knowledge on ageing in the labour market, introduce evidence-based policies and actions to promote work ability, and introduce country policies and best practices
of age management in labour markets and workplaces. One important target is also to improve Nordic collaboration and networking concerning age matters in work life.

National focus
The one-day seminar is comprised of morning sessions, which will be similar in each Nordic country, and afternoon sessions, which can be tailored according to each country's own burning national questions of extending work life. Therefore, the local organizer can design the afternoon sessions and select speaders to represent both the conceptual and practical evidence-based solutions for a better and longer work life. The demanding target is to identify concrete ways foward. The knowing - doing gap must be urgently bridged.
