Background
Current occupational safety research is increasingly focusing on positive and proactive safety measures such as the ’climate’ of safety in a social unit, as opposed to negative measures such as accidents. Safety climate can be described as the shared safety perceptions in a social unit at a certain time, and recent research has found important relationships between measures of safety climate and safety performance. This course is based on state-of-the-art research concerning the definitions and dimensionality of the concept safety climate, including the Nordic Questionnaire on Occupational Safety Climate that is being developed by the Nordic Network of Occupational Safety Researchers.

Objectives
The main objective of the course is to provide participants with theoretical and practical knowledge on, and skills in measuring and working with, safety climate. After completing the course the participants will be able to distinguish between safety climate and safety culture, think critically about the dimensions involved in measuring safety climate, be aware of the pros and cons of longitudinal versus cross-sectional studies, and to have an understanding of questionnaire scales and the ethics involved in carrying out questionnaire studies.

Target groups
The course is targeted towards researchers and health and safety practitioners with interests in the concepts and methodology involved in the measurement of and intervention into safety climate. PhD and Masters’ students may negotiate with their university to receive credit of up to 72 course hours or 3-ECTS.

Course structure and learning methodology
Total of 10 day’s (three ECTS) course credit consisting of: a 3-day NIVA-course; 3 days for a questionnaire assignment prior to the course, and 4 days for literature reading and course preparation. Prior to the course students are to have read the course literature (200 pages) and collect 25 completed questionnaires (will be made available together with instructions for use in Danish, English, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish). The completed questionnaires are to be sent to the course leader 2-weeks prior to the start of the course - for analysis and use during the course. Course materials as well as a communication forum will be made available to students at the portal: www.nordically.org. The course will consist of lectures, open dialogue and group work.
