Occupational health and alcohol: Prevention of alcohol-related harm at workplaces (4907)

31 August-2 September 2009
Hanasaari Cultural Centre, Espoo (Helsinki area), Finland

Preliminary programme

This workshop is organised in connection with the Nordic Environment Meeting (NAM).

Objectives
The purpose of the workshop is to introduce successful approaches to prevention and intervention of alcohol related problems at the workplace. In addition, the aim is to create a coherent support strategy for persons involved in developing practices for dealing with excessive alcohol use among employees.

Background
Preventing alcohol-related harm among adults and reducing the negative impact on the workplace is one of the five priority themes presented in the EU commission's strategy to support member states in reducing alcohol related harm (2006). Enforcement of current regulations, codes and standards is essential to reduce the negative impact of harmful and hazardous alcohol consumption. Workplace-based interventions are regarded as an effective way of dealing with adult problematic drinking habits.

Target group
Occupational health personnel, and other professionals in the field who need ideas and support in their work when tackling alcohol problems among employees.

Working methods
Working methods are mainly group work and practical exercises, while the keynote speaker in the plenary will provide background information about alcohol and its influence on Nordic working life.

When planning the strategy to remodel a company's alcohol policy, there is a new tool called A-Step to work with. A-Step is created in the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, and this workshop will introduce this method.

Venue
The workshop will take place at Hanasaari Cultural Centre www.hanasaari.fi, about 6 km from the Helsinki city centre and about 15 km from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Hanasaari is easy to reach by taxi or by several local buses from the Helsinki Central Bus Station (Kamppi Shopping Centre).

Registration fees
The fee for early registration until 15 July 2009 is EUR 460 and from
16 July 2009 EUR 560. These prices include participation in the plenary sessions of the NAM, congress material plus lunches and coffee/ tea breaks during the meeting days.
