Nordic Summer Symposium: Does size matter?
Benefits and consequences
of hospital mergers (4903)

25-26 May / 25-29 May 2009
Nordic School of Public Health, Gothenburg, Sweden

Background
The summer symposium scrutinises the benefits and consequences of the current and coming centralising trends in the Nordic countries, with structural changes of the hospitals and hospital mergers. When health care entities grow, what does this mean in terms of efficiency, financial accountability, patient satisfaction and working environment?

The main topics will include comparisons between the Nordic countries and examples of hospital mergers at both early and later stages. Lecturers will be Nordic and international researchers, representing a variety of disciplines (organisation, work environment, economics, technology, psychology, public health, nursing), Nordic top-leaders and politicians.

The symposium is initiated by the NOVO research network, which aims at increasing knowledge for building sustainable systems in health care organisations with a combined focus on work environment, productivity and quality.

The symposium is arranged in collaboration between NHV (Nordic School of Public Health) and NIVA (Nordic Institute for Advanced Training in Occupational Health).

Objectives
The aim of the symposium is to provide multi-professional knowledge transfer regarding the main challenges for sustainable systems in large hospitals.

Target groups
Company representatives, researchers, administrators and representatives of social partners.

Main topics

Is the bigger also the better? Economic, productivity, quality and work environment consequences and benefits
Lessons from Nordic and European experiences of hospital system changes
Communication challenges in large hospitals: Strategic communication, leader-employee interaction, information systems
Management challenges: Parallel steering practices, support structures to handle daily hassles, managing work environment in complex health care systems
Tools to create sustainable systems and handle the paradox of strong top-management and professional participation: (1) Process rationalisations of standardised care through Lean and Kaizen, (2) Collaborative re-conceptualisation of core-tasks in change laboratories
Methodological challenges: the perspective of the patient, combined analysis of work environment, productivity, costs and quality
Ethical issues

Course structure and working method
The short summer symposium
The first 1, 5 days entity will have a political and practical approach and is aimed at decision makers and practitioners. A few key-note speakers will give longer presentations. There will also be shorter, dynamic presentations by top-leaders, politicians and researchers that are followed by debates and discussions.
The full research course
The four day course will include the 1, 5 days plus an additional 2, 5 days in which the focus will be on multidisciplinary research in the area (health, work environment, organisation/production, and quality research). Students will also have the opportunity to present and discuss their own projects. Participating in the course and an individual assignment (3 to 5 pages, to be submitted within two weeks after the course) will give 5 ECTS points. The individual assignment will give the opportunity to integrate the wider perspective, gained at the course into the students' own theses / doctoral dissertations.

WELCOME
NIVA is a Nordic institution funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers to provide advanced training for experts in the fields of occupational health and safety, and work life in general. The NIVA concept is based on the idea of broader networking of all the Nordic governments, authorities and research institutions. The best trainers, lecturers and educators, not only from the Nordic countries, but also worldwide contribute to the NIVA programmes.
Today, the courses and seminars attract about 300 participants a year, and the feedback from the participants speaks also strongly for face-to-face contacts both between the trainee and the trainer, and among the trainees themselves. We hope that this brochure gives you important information, and cordially welcomes you to the forthcoming event.
