Second international course on

Seafarers' Occupational Risks and Health Examinations
(4806)

"Physical and Mental Demands and Work Ability in Seafaring"

10-13 June 2008 Clarion Hotel Admiral, Bergen, Norway

Programme

Background
Seafaring is one of the most international trades in the world. Seafarers on board a single ship may represent numerous different nationalities and cultures. This means a variety of different potential health risk factors that the examining doctor should be able to detect when evaluating fitness for service at sea. Problems related to vigilance and fatique are common problems aboard ships sailing 24 hours a day. All the seafarers must be able to carry out not only their daily work but also tasks assigned to them in case of exceptional situations, such as rescue operations or fire on board a ship.

Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide the participants an overview and understanding of how to evaluate a seaman's physical and mental status in relation to the needs of work on board a ship. Attention will be paid to encountering a seafarer from a foreign country and culture and the topics of fatique and vigilance on board a ship. Harmonisation of conducting medical examinations for seafarers will also be discussed. Participants will have an opportunity to gain personal experience in a sea rescue exercise.

After the course the participants will have an overview on:

  • how to evaluate physical fitness of an individual seafarer in relation to the work demands on board a ship
  • how to evaluate the mental fitness of a seafarer
  • how to encounter and examine seafarers from foreign countries and cultures
  • vigilance and how to cope with sleep and fatigue on board
