Age Management: Life course and Work
(4802)

9-13 March 2008, Hotel Riekonlinna, Saariselkä (Lapland), Finland

Registration closed! (The course is fully booked.)

Background
In Nordic countries as well as in the European Union as whole the net working years are too short due to several reasons. The younger generations enter working life too late, the middle-aged groups have risks of long absence periods during their careers, and the older generations leave work life much too early. As a consequence, lower than aspired employment rates and too high dependency ratios lead to high economic and well-being burdens for the societies. The increase of the net weight of working years should focus on all generations that are potentially active in the labour market.

Objectives
The main objective of the course is to provide the participants with the concept of "life course". After completing the course, the participants will be able to identify the critical phases and transfers in the life course as well as to plan and use tools and actions to make their working career more solid and unbroken.

Target group
The "life course" connects several actors and service providers in the levels of work organisations and society. In addition to the researchers that scrutinise different generations in work, the authorities and practitioners that deal with social affairs and health or work and education, trade unions and employer associations, as well as several service providers in the areas of for example health promotion, rehabilitation and life long learning form the target groups. Also managers and supervisors of work organisations belong to the main actors that affect the life course of personnel.

Main topics
Age Management
• Life course
• Transitions

Course structure
This four-day course will use lecturing of leading experts, group works and round table debates. If requested, a one-year follow-up meeting can be organised.

Location and accommodation
The course will take place in Saariselkä, Lapland. Saariselkä is located in the largest area of wild country in Europe, 200 km north from the Arctic Circle. The greatest attraction is the splendid mountainous landscape. There are about 220 km cross country ski tracks and 12 downhill slopes in this area. The weather in March is usually nice and sunny the temperature ranging from -10 Cº to -15 Cº.

Saariselkä is easy to reach by FINNAIR daily flights from Helsinki to Ivalo. The flight time is only one hour 35 minutes and from the Ivalo airport there is bus transportation from each flight directly to the conference hotel taking about 20 minutes. You can also come by train, taking the overnight sleeper to the city of Rovaniemi, then continuing on by bus (for more information, please visit: www.saariselka.fi).

The course starts on Sunday afternoon 9 March at 16.00 with registration and coffee and ends with lunch on Thursday, 13 March at about 11.30. It will be possible to enjoy free-time activities during the extended lunch breaks (from 12.00 to 15.30). We recommend you to take along warm winter clothing and proper shoes (otherwise you will need only casual clothing).

Accommodation has been arranged by NIVA from Sunday to Thursday at Hotel Riekonlinna, which is a first-class holiday and conference hotel (www.laplandhotels.com). The total price of a single room with full board is EUR 741,00 and of a shared double room EUR 567,00/person including breakfast, two coffee breaks, lunch and dinner every day. On Wednesday evening a special lumberjack programme with dinner and transportation is arranged at the "Revontuli (= Northern Lights) Court" situated in the middle of forest (ca 15 min. drive from Saariselkä).

Detailed information will be given in the confirmation letter, which will be sent to the participants after the registration deadline.
